Where to Drink in Anchorage — The Best Bars and Breweries in the City

Anchorage has a bar and brewery scene that reflects the personality of Alaska broadly: unpretentious, serious about quality, and built for a population that works hard and drinks well. From downtown alehouses with dozens of Alaska taps to midtown brewpubs with their own production lines, here's where to go.

Humpy's Great Alaskan Alehouse

Humpy's on 6th Avenue downtown is the flagship of the Anchorage bar scene. The tap list is built almost entirely around Alaska craft beers — Alaskan Brewing, Denali Brewing, Broken Tooth, Anchorage Brewing, King Street Brewing, and rotating guest handles. The room is loud, especially when live music is running, and the energy on a Friday night is hard to match anywhere in the city. Happy hour 4–7pm. Food is excellent — halibut fish and chips are the menu centerpiece. This is the bar that defines what an Anchorage evening can be.

Glacier BrewHouse

Glacier BrewHouse on West 5th Avenue brews its own beer on-site and serves it in a warm, wood-heavy dining room that manages to feel upscale and casual at the same time. The rotating house taps include a solid pale ale, a malt-forward amber, and a stout that holds up in winter. Happy hour 3–6pm. The food menu is among the best in downtown Anchorage — the halibut preparations are consistently excellent, and the wood-fired dishes add depth that most pub kitchens don't achieve.

49th State Brewing

49th State Brewing has a downtown Anchorage location and a second location in Healy near Denali. The Anchorage spot is large and lively, with a rotating tap list that features both house-brewed beers and Alaska guest selections. The pub food is crowd-pleasing — burgers, flatbreads, shareable appetizers — and the space can handle groups that smaller bars can't. It's a reliable stop for visiting a brewery without needing to drive to the outskirts of town.

Moose's Tooth Pub and Pizzeria / Broken Tooth Brewery

Moose's Tooth Pub and Pizzeria in midtown operates its own Broken Tooth Brewery, and the beer is available both there and at the adjacent Bear Tooth Theatrepub. The Aurora Amber Ale and the Fairbanks Lager are the flagship offerings, reliably solid year-round. The Broken Tooth taps are best experienced alongside a pizza at Moose's Tooth — it's a full experience rather than just a drink stop.

Anchorage Brewing Company

Anchorage Brewing Company operates on Abbott Road and is known for producing some of the most experimental and high-quality craft beer in the state. The taproom is a destination for serious beer drinkers — wild ales, barrel-aged releases, Belgian-influenced styles that have earned national attention. If you're in town for more than a couple of days and care about craft beer, the taproom is a required stop.

King Street Brewing

King Street Brewing on King Street in Midtown is a neighborhood brewery with a loyal local following. The taproom is relaxed and unpretentious, with a core lineup of well-made beers and a rotating seasonal selection. It's the kind of neighborhood brewery that every city wishes it had.

Quick Reference

  • Best for live music: Humpy's Great Alaskan Alehouse
  • Best food alongside beer: Glacier BrewHouse, Moose's Tooth
  • Best for serious craft beer: Anchorage Brewing Company
  • Best neighborhood feel: King Street Brewing
  • Best for groups: 49th State Brewing

Drinking in Anchorage means drinking local. The Alaska craft beer scene has produced nationally recognized breweries from a state with fewer than 750,000 people, and the bars in Anchorage showcase that output. Order something from a brewery you haven't heard of and you'll rarely be disappointed.

Anchorage has more going on in the bar and brewery department than most visitors expect. The craft beer scene has matured significantly over the last decade, and the neighborhood bar culture is genuinely local.
