Biography
Casey Smith Project is led by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Casey Smith, who studied at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and previously spent years in the band Thought Trade. After that group disbanded, Smith released unused material as the solo EP Talk Memory in 2016, then assembled a touring band under the name Casey Smith Project, now rounded out by drummer Derek Haukaas and bassist Scott Joyce.
The band describes its sound as a fusion of indie rock, folk, and soul, built on tape delay, modulated synthesizers, and layered guitar loops. Its releases include the LPs Lose Face (2021) and Red Lights and Whiskey (2023, recorded at Wattage Studios in Anchorage), followed by Just Like You Wanted It, released in February 2025.
Based in Fairbanks, the band remains active on the road, including a 2025 tour that took them as far as Hawaii, and has been covered by outlets including the Anchorage Daily News and Alaska Current alongside regular play on Anchorage's KNBA 90.3.
