Biography
Medium Build is the recording name of Nicholas Carpenter, who grew up in Marietta, Georgia, then moved to Nashville at 21 to study songwriting at Middle Tennessee State University. In 2016 he moved to Anchorage, Alaska, and began performing and releasing music under the name Medium Build, self-releasing his debut album Falling Apart that same year.
Carpenter built a devoted local following in Anchorage over several years, playing small rooms and bars before graduating to larger venues in the city, while releasing Softboy and Roughboy (both 2018) and Wild (2019). In 2023 he signed with Slowplay/Island Records, and that year had his first charting single, "Friend for Life," a collaboration with X Ambassadors that reached the Billboard Alternative Digital Song Sales chart.
Carpenter has since relocated from Anchorage to Nashville to continue his career, releasing the album Country in 2024, and continues to reference his years in Anchorage as formative to his songwriting and public identity.
